Merry Old Souls

Old Ben Franklin was a merry old soul,

He walked down Market Street munching a roll,

And a girl laughed loud, and her laughter was so ranklin’

That old Ben Franklin made her Mrs. Ben Franklin.

Old Julius Caesar was a merry old soul,

To be a Roman Emperor was all his goal;

But he put away the crown; He was such an old teaser

That the mob put the finger on old Julius Caesar.

Old Isaac Newton was a merry old soul,

He invented gravitation while out for a stroll;

And no one up to now has succeeded in refutin’

The good old hypothesis of old Isaac Newton.

Old Savanarola was a merry old soul,

He held all of Florence under rigid control,

But the people didn’t like it, so they doped his Coca-Cola,

And then they heated Florence with old Savanarola.

Old Francois Rabelais was a merry old soul;

Many of his writings were very, very droll,

But the censors struck, and they treated him quite shabbily

By cutting out the good parts of good old Francois Rabelais.
